When You Get Your Child A Pet

Happy #nationalpetday to all my fellow pet lovers out there!

When I was younger I always loved animals. For one of my birthday’s growing up - my dads friend, who had a farm and a bunch of animals, brought a mini petting zoo to our backyard - I begged my parents to let me keep one of the kittens I walked around with the whole day...and then we had our cat Macbeth (even though we already had two cats and two dogs at this point).

We ALWAYS had animals, mainly because of me begging to get them, LOL, but, I knew growing up that I would always want animals of my own one day! Since Evan also grew up always having both dogs and cats too, we were just waiting for the perfect time to get some of our own!

Evan and I had been together for a few years at this point, we were out visiting his mom in Huntington Beach, CA. She had just gotten a kitten (Luna) - which obviously gave me kitten fever!... Which lead us to getting our sweet baby Stingray! Oh, and keeping Luna too! They were just too cute together & were meant to stay together. So I flew to New Jersey to meet one of my besties Lauren (all by myself with two cats under my feet on the plane - I probably looked like a crazy person). Then, we drove back to Pittsburgh with them. They were our little traveling kitties for awhile. First we lived at Evans Dads with them, then at college in our first apartment together, and then we moved into Evans grandparents for about a year and a half with them (s/o to Evans fam for being the best!)

Finally in August of 2017 - we got our first home together! So obviously as soon as we finally moved in, I immediately decided we needed a puppy, Kuro! He’s the best boy ever, he’s a German Shepherd mix, but has the shortest legs I’ve ever seen! Just imagine a German Shepherd and a corgi mixed together... that’s our boy We first got him when I was newly pregnant, people thought I was crazy - a new house, a new baby, and now a new puppy?! But I didn’t care, I knew I would be home alone all the time, working on my pottery, and I needed someone there to protect us! I also knew I wanted my baby to have a puppy to grow up with so I thought - what better time than the next 9 months to train a puppy?! (I admit, I think I am crazy, but hey YOLO right? lol!) Thus the chaos began.

Then we had Naomi - her and Kuro instantly became besties. He became her protector, following us around everywhere we went with her, checking on her when she cried. Then she began to crawl & the fun started!

Naomi LOVES to play with Kuro! No joke, she will crawl over to him & grab the toy right out of his mouth. For some people that sounds scary, but honestly it’s the coolest thing to watch! Kuro is sooo gentle with her. He will literally just open his mouth and let her grab whatever toy he has. Now, if that was me trying to grab a toy out of his mouth - he would have a death grip on it. Its so amazing to see how gentle and patient he is with her. I also love that she’s learning how to share!

Being a stay at home mom means no daycare - just me and Naomi 24/7. I love it, but I also wanted her to learn how to share and interact with others. And she’s learning how to do that with her animals!

A couple weeks ago I decided that Kuro needed a friend (remember back to when I admitted I was crazy?! I wasn’t kidding haha!) My parents have 2 dogs that are besties & so does my brother. You could say we like to travel in packs, lol. So after convincing Evan - we got a 9 week old full bred German Shepherd girl - Kiva! Her and Kuro get along SO well, he’s soo happy to have a friend! The reason I wanted to get him a friend was because, Naomi was obviously getting most of the attention, & he’s still a puppy who just wants to play play play! So it has honestly helped chill him out by getting him a friend.

But now we have Naomi crawling and the puppy running right next to her (it’s a chaotic household over here - but there’s never a dull moment!) Evan will throw the dogs toy & they’ll run towards it and Naomi just cracks up, she loves her puppies! She’s also helping to teach the new pup to share too. Naomi will go over and grab the toy, like she does with Kuro, and Kiva will just sit there and wait for her to give it back. It’s so sweet!

Naomi also loves her cats! She’ll point to Luna and Stingray and try to say “cat!” She tries to crawl after them to pet them, but they run away a little too quickly

I’m just so happy Naomi will grow up to be an animal lover just like her parents are, while also learning to be kind, gentle, sharing, and patient as well!
