What The Heck Is Up With Nicolina's Hair?

It didn't take me until this week to realize that a lot of people think we seriously shave Nicolina's head and leave just a patch. A few people have asked us just in this week and it really made me think about how others see her, and when I think of how it would look from a strangers' perspective I can't help but laugh picturing it.

What this patch of hair really is, is congenital nevus on the scalp, see here for some more information on it, but in short, it's a mole or birth mark that occurs in 1-2 percent on the population, according the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Nicolina had this mark since birth and because it's located on her scalp, it sort of blends in more. As a newborn, her hair was darker so it just looked like a longer piece, & honestly, the first 12 hours after her birth, we just thought it was that, a patch of thicker hair.

But now that the rest of her hair has thinned out and came in lighter, it looks uniquely amazing. Before it got too long, you could pull them across her forehead like bangs. Now though, it's a ridiculously long piece of hair that is so close to being long enough to tuck behind her ear! It totally needs cut, but Joe & I just can't come to do it yet.
