It was Saturday, January 6th, 2018 & I was packing up all my photography gear for the wedding I was shooting that day. It was -2 degrees outside and I was expecting my period at any minute. Weddings days are super chaotic and it's unknown when I will be able to make bathroom trips, so I was locked & loaded with a plethera of feminine hygiene products in every free space of my different bags (even one in my boot!). Little did I know I was about a month pregnant!
That week, still expecting my period, I found myself stopping for a cheeseburger happy meal on my way home from work to tide me over until dinner 3 DAYS IN A ROW! I kept telling my husband I swore I was pregnant, to which he didn't seem phased by... until he found my stash of happy meal boxes on the floor of the back seat. That's when he suggested I get a pregnancy test!
It was late the following Thursday when we stopped at Walgreens. We headed in as though we were 16 years old, trying to be sneaky and praying we wouldn't run into anyone we knew. We grabbed the test & a Mountain Dew (I still have the receipt) & stood in line. The woman in front of us, dressed in scrubs, finished checking out & as she grabbed her bag she noticed our test sitting on the counter. She SCREAMED, as she walking out the door "if that's positive, come see me, I do sonograms!" We were mortified, the young checkout boy heard, and the 5 people behind us heard that we were potentially expecting! Side note: drug store employees must encounter the most awkward situations.
At this time we lived with my in-laws, so I snuck into the bathroom by myself to pee on the stick. It almost immediately revealed 2 pink lines! I felt like I was dreaming! I knew we'd make great parents, it was what Joe & I always wanted, however we were both climbing out of unemployment and obvious financial set backs & I was scared shitless! I slid the positive test up my sweater sleeve and headed to the back room to show Joe. I pulled it out from my sleeve and I will never forget the look on his face. It was a mix between "holy shit" & "hell yes!" The "hell yes" shined through his eyes, however because he was going to be a Daddy!
4 long months later we closed on our house! It's nothing fancy, has it's flaws, but it's ours, all ours. As grateful as we were for my in-laws to let us and our 2 large dogs live with them for a year in a half, we were over the moon about buying our first house, getting out of our rut, and making our first moves as parents-to-be!
